Gaudi window

Picture
Stairway to another place
The inspiration for this commissioned stained glass window comes from Barcelona architect Antoni Gaudi. The panel will be installed into a wall opening that gets sunlight, but is close/next to another building in Barcelona Spain. Working closely with the client (who will remain anonymous for security reasons :)),we designed a window which represented Barcelona, and was opaque, without blocking light, so the building cannot be seen through the earth-toned colored glasses. Next is the delicate process of getting the window to Barcelona in one piece & installed!

BMW R1200GS

Picture

Shown with white background:

There is a separate windshield & oil painting on the grille as well as a sand carved coil spring under the grille. The engine is made of ribbed glass; the headlight is ribbed mirror glass and the smaller (low beam light) has a piece of transparent yellow over it to give the appearance that it is on.

Faceted clear glass (Dalle De Verre):

Picture
Using thick 1 inch glass I assembled clusters & then soldered them together. This differs from the usual technique for doing dalle de verre, where epoxy is poured around the chunks to secure them into place. Soldering them in is not a fast process!

Front tire detail:

Picture
As keeping with tradition I sand carved black glass to give the tread pattern detail.

Victory Vegas 8-ball

Picture
Shown with white background: Front wheel has 25 separate pieces of glass in it. Wheel is sandblasted mirror glass to resemble polished aluminum.
Picture
Detail: showing mirrored glass exhaust pipes & rear wheel sprocket with sandblasted area's between spokes of the sprocket.
Picture
Detail: showing handlebars, engine & forks. Engine fins/stripes are painted black.

Mostly clear textured BMW R1200R

Picture
I used the same design as the black R1200R that was created earlier to show the difference that the choice of glass can make for a glass art piece. The window has a ghostly/x-rayish look in comparison to colored glasses used in the earlier version. It's a personal preference for sure.

HARLEY DAVIDSON HERITAGE SOFT TAIL CLASSIC:

Picture
_Using layered (stacked) pieces of colored glass, sand carving, & actual bicycle spokes with no glass between the spokes, this is again a fairly realistic piece. Done in the copper foil technique, the background glass in the sky/top 3/4ths of the window is a very light colored amber. You can see the difference in tint if you look at the spokes in the tire which is open, showing the real colors of the outdoors. The photo, does not do the piece justice!! The red is very deep and vibrant, and the chrome in the headlights, motor & forks doesn't show up in the photos the way it pops in reality.

This was my first attempt at doing a motorcycle window. It now lives in Barcelona, Spain. I think it's still my favorite for some reason. Maybe it's because it's the bike I ride, except mine is white.

When I was very young, my Mom got me to go to church by promising stained glass viewing. I did a lot of stained glass in college and beyond, but after I found glass blowing, I put stained glass in the background. Now, I've started doing stained glass again - and, after a 20 year hiatus, I'm enjoying it.
